Week 1: In our first class we had to bring an electronic device which runs on battery and can be taken apart for research. I choose for a Tamagotchi. The intention was to analyze "what is possible with simple electronic circuits". So we did so called circuit bending.
"Circuit bending is the creative, short-circuiting of electronic devices such as low voltage, battery-powered guitar effects, children's toys and small digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. Emphasizing spontaneity and randomness, the techniques of circuit bending have been commonly associated with noise music, though many more conventional contemporary musicians and musical groups have been known to experiment with "bent" instruments. Circuit bending usually involves dismantling the machine and adding components such as switches and potentiometers that alter the circuit."
Week 2: We started to make a simple coding with our arduino-board. We programmed how to make one single LED blink on the board itself and later on how to make three LED's blink on the same time so that they form a traffic light.
projectbegeleiding: Examples for interactive installations
Week 1: At the beginning we had to choose for three examples of an interactive installation. Therefor it was important that all three installations are based on a different idea how to communicate with its surrounding.
Woche 1: Zu Beginn mussten wir uns fuer 3 Beispiele einer interaktiven Installation entscheiden. Dabei war es wichtig, das es unterschiedliche Arten der Installation sein mussten.
First video: A cube was placed on a public place. People could only see whats in it in certain places and could interact with tubes to make sound or let water flow out of them. Here was no use made of flat TV's but direct contact with people was the main idea. Erstes Video: Hier wurde ein viereckiger Wuerfel auf einen frei zugaenglichen Platz platziert. Dieser Wuerfel ist nur an vereinzelten Stellen einsehbar. Mehrere Rohre kommen aus diesem Wuerfel und enden an unterschiedlichen, auch nicht weiter einsehbaren Orten. Wie im Video beschrieben reagiert der Wuerfel sowohl auf Geraeusche, Bewegung sowie Beruehrung.
Second video: Here was the idea to make a visual- and audio-application. A video is displayed on a plate which is sensitive to pressure. If someone exerts pressure on the board, the video is played addicted to the speed and durability of the pressure. Zweites Video: Hier handelt es sich um eine sowohl visuelle als auch Auditive Installation. Es wird ein Video auf eine druckempfindliche Platte projeziert. Wird nun druck ausgeuebt, wird das Video, jeh nach Druckanzahl und geschwindigkeit, abgespielt.
Third video: This installation is used to attract the attention of potential customers. Movement- and pressure-sensitive sensors are used. If a customer walks alongside the installation, the sensor sends a signal to the main pc. Words appear on the screen to give advice to the customer. If he reacts as expected, more words appear which can be shifted and scaled. Drittes Video: Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Werbeinstallation. Es werden sowohl Bewegungssensoren als auch druckempfindliche Flachbildschirme eingesetzt. Laeuft ein Objekt nach genug vor der Werbetafel vorbei, registrieren dies die Bewegungssensoren und auf dem Monitor erscheinen Schriftzeichen. Wenn der Kunde nun wie vorgesehen reagiert und den Monitor beruehrt, erscheinen weitere Bilder die durch Beruehrung bewegt und skaliert werden koennen.

Week 2: concepts for my own installation
The anteroom shows it all
1. The anteroom of the toilet is filmed for about 2 hours. In this period of time it is essential to watch how many people wash their hands. 2. After that, the installation is being started: When a person enters the toilet, the black light turns on. Several fingerprints and other liquid substances (maybe also letters and short phrases) appear on the floor and the walls. When the person leaves the toilet, the black light turns out again. 3. Meanwhile the anteroom of this toilet is filmed again for several hours. The question is: Do more people wash their hands?
Goal -> To influence a person through signs and symbols ( behaviour manipulation)
1. Es wird ueber einen Zeitraum von ca. 2 Std. der Vorraum mit dem Waschbecken gefilmt. Dabei wird darauf geachtet, wie viele Personen sich, nach dem diese auf Toilette waren, die Haende waschen. 2. Anschliessend wird die Installation gestartet: Wenn eine Person in die Toilette kommt und die Tuere abschliesst, ist dies der Ausloeser fuer das Schwarzlich. Schriftzeichen und Fingerabdruecke werden an alle Stellen sichtbar. Durch erneute Betaetigung des Schlosses wird das Licht wieder ausgeschaltet. 3. Waehrend dessen wird erneut in einem Zeitraum von ca. 2 Std. der Vorraum mit dem Waschbecken gefilmt. Die Frage ist: Waschen sich nun mehr Personen die Haende?
Ziel -> Beeinflussung einer Person durch Zeichen und Symbole (Verhaltensaenderung)

The ringing and painting stairway
The stairway is mostly a sterile place, which is mainly used as a passage and nobody stays there for long. It is not more then a simple utility to get from one level to the next. But what, if more happens? If by the movement of a person something develops and the room no longer remains sterile and neutral , but evolves into a place where sounds and color find their way into.
The idea is that by the slightest movement a tone ring out (for each stage a tone). If a person walks from beneath up to the top of the stairway, a scale could be heard. A sensor registers the sound and at the wall towards which the person moves, coloured signs appear. Thus both a musical as well as a pictorial composition develops. Of course more than one person can be on the stairway. In this case one is not any more the exclusive producer of this interaction, but shares this task. In such a way melodies can develop, which cannot be foreseen due to the different movement samples of each person. Also the picture, which develops at the wall, cannot be foreseen. In order to give the next person a chance to paint their own picture, at the top and at the bottom of the stairway sensors are attached. If someone walks past these sensors the system (in this case the picture) reboots and a new image can be drawn.
Das Treppenhaus ist zumeist ein steriler Ort, welcher nur als Durchgang genutzt wird und sich niemand lange aufhaelt. Es ist nicht mehr als ein Hilfsmittel um von einer Etage zur naechsten zu gelangen. Doch was, wenn dort mehr passieren wuerde? Wenn sich durch die Bewegung einer Person etwas entwickel wuerde und so der Raum nicht mehr steril und neutral bleibt, sondern sich weiter entwickelt zu einem Ort an dem Klaenge und Farben einzug halten?
Die Idee sieht vor, dass durch Bewegungssensoren Toene (fuer jede Stufe ein Ton) erklingen. Wuerde die Person also von unten nach oben laufen, wuerde sie eine Tonleiter abspielen. Ein Geraeuschsensor registriert diesen klang und an der Wand, auf die sich die Person zubewegt, erscheinen Zeichen. Dadurch entsteht sowohl eine musikalische wie auch eine malerische Komposition. Es koennen sich natuerlich auch mehrere Personen auf der Treppe befinden. In diesem Fall ist man nicht mehr der alleinige Erzeuger dieser Interaktion, sondern teilt sich diese Aufgabe. Es koennen so Melodien entstehen, welche sich aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Bewegungsmuster, nicht vorhersehen lassen. Auch das Bild, welches an der Wand entsteht, kann nicht vorhergesehen werden.
Um nun der naechsten person die Chance zu geben ein eigenes Bild zu erstellen, werden am Anfang und am Ende der Treppe Sensoren angebracht. Laeuft man an diesen vorbei, wird das System neu gestartet und es beginnt wieder von vorne.

I decided to go on with the stairway. However there is a small change. There will be no sign to develope on the wall, as was planned. In my opinion the connection with a stair and a scale is already enough. As light barrier i use some very bright LED on the one side and some light-sensors on the other side of the stairway. If the ray of light is interrupted by a person, a signal is sent to the Arduino-bord. From there it goes on to the midi program Max/MSP, which is responsible for the sound. A certain tone is assigned to each light-sensor. Thus, if a person walks from bottom to top over the stairway, a scale developes. The same will happen if several people move over the stairs.
Ich habe mich dafuer entschieden mit der Idee der Treppe weiter zu arbeiten. Allerdings gibt es eine kleine Aenderung. Es soll nun kein Bild mehr an der Wand entstehen, so wie geplant. Meiner Ansicht nach ist die Verbindung einer Treppe mit Geraeuschen in Abfolge einer Tonleiter schon genug. Als Lichtschranke verwende ich auf der einen Seite sehr helle LEDs und auf der anderen Seite eben so viele Fotowiderstaende. Wird der Lichtstrahl nun durch eine Person unterbrochen, wird ein Signal an das Arduino-Bord gesendet. Von dort aus geht es weiter zu dem Programm Max/MSP, welches fuer die Musik/ Klaenge verantwortlich ist. Jedem Fotowiderstand wird ein bestimmter Ton zugeordnet. Laeuft also eine person von unten nach oben ueber die Treppe entsteht so eine Tonleiter. Das selbe passiert auch wenn sich mehrere Personen auf der Treppe bewegen.
